High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Geomembrane

GPF’s standard HDPE geomembrane is a high quality, black colored product that is manufactured in our state of the art Saudi Arabian facility.  GPF uses 97.5% pure high density polyethylene virgin polymer resins and 2.5% carbon black with trace amounts of antioxidants and heat stabilizers. No other additives, filters or extenders are used. GPF’s HDPE geomembranes are: UV stabilized; highly resistant to an extended list of chemicals; and dimensionally stable with exceptional durability including high puncture & stress crack resistance.

Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) Geomembrane

GPF’s standard LLDPE geomembrane is a high quality, black colored product; that is manufactured in our state-of-the-art Saudi Arabian facility.  GPF uses 95% linear low density polyethylene virgin polymer and 2.5% carbon black with trace amounts of antioxidants and heat stabilizers. No other additives, filters or extenders are used. This product is flexible and has high elongation properties allowing it to be used in various applications that expect some subgrade movement.

Aquaculture, the captive breeding of shrimp, fish and other seafood, is a critical and growing food supply industry that utilizes HDPE geomembranes to provide secure and effective water and organism containment.  Aquaculture globally supplies over 70 million tonnes of product annually and employs millions of square metres of both land ponds and open ocean waters. It is a critical industry in the Middle East with key participants including National Aquaculture, Naqa and Saudi Fisheries and also across Asia Pacific and South East Asia for multiple seafood varieties. Looking forward, the industry expects continued and significant medium to long term growth.

HDPE geomembranes and other geosynthetic materials are used to insulate foundations, stabilize terrain and seal structures for many types of civil structures – from multi-storey buildings to transportation corridors (rail, road, airports, retaining walls, etc). The long term, high strength, dimensional stability and product durability of HDPE geomembranes make it an ideal isolation material for construction. HDPE geomembranes have been used in the civil and construction industries globally for decades and are expected to remain a fundamental construction material in the future.

Lining of industrial vessels and processes is critical to ensuring the containment of any chemicals or contaminants utilized.  For example, concrete formed and HDPE lined tanks/vessels can also offer more cost effective construction than metal or plastic molded alternatives with increased flexibility on their usage.

Landfill is a global industry that is heavily governed and regulated by regional, national and international environmental agencies. All landfill sites require either primary and/or secondary containment works, necessitating their lining with HDPE geomembranes prior to use for all types of waste.  HDPE geomembranes protect the soil and groundwater from contamination from leachate liquid which is produced over time by both domestic and industrial waste. When full, the landfill area is ‘capped’ (or covered) by HDPE geomembranes to protect the area from the resulting production of gases within the landfill.  In some regions, these gases are collected and utilized as fuel for power generation and other industrial purposes.

Oil and Gas
HDPE geomembranes are used in critical environmental containment applications for the Oil & Gas industry, especially the drilling industry.  A key application is the lining of mud pits where it is critical to protect the underlying soil and groundwater from contamination from the drilling chemicals via the use of high quality HDPE geomembrane liners. This is a critical aspect to the largest industry in Saudi Arabia, the GCC and other key oil and gas producing regions.

HDPE geomembranes are essential environmental containment tools for the global mining industry. A key application is the lining of heap leach ponds where it is critical to protect the underlying soil and groundwater from contamination from the mining chemicals via the use of high quality HDPE geomembrane liners. This is a highly repetitive, ongoing and critical aspect within one of the largest industries in Australia, Africa, North and South America, South East Asia and other leading mining regions.

Waste Water
HDPE geomembranes are well utilized by wastewater and sewage treatment plants.  Such plants separate solid and liquid wastes, and solid wastes are oxidized and dried in large containment ponds. These ponds must be lined by high quality HDPE geomembranes in order to avoid any contamination of the soil and groundwater.

Water applications of HDPE geomembranes extend from the lining of man-made reservoirs, canals, ponds and lakes through to golf courses and hotel / resort water features. In all cases the focus is to redevelop the landscape and ensure the long term containment of scarce water resources.  In regions with extreme weather conditions often natural topographies are adjusted and/or reinforced and therefore lined by HDPE geomembranes to ensure protection against contamination, including for example, irregular rain and insufficient drainage systems.Further, in scarce water regions like the Middle East, reverse osmosis (RO) water desalination plants are used to convert salt water into fresh water.  The process produces high salinity waste water that then requires salt evaporation ponds to dispose of the resulting salt.  These ponds require lining by high quality HDPE geomembranes to protect against leakage to / contamination of underground water resources.

GPF is committed to quality and exceeding both global and regional industry standards. GPF has a full laboratory on site allowing our staff to fully and frequently test our ongoing production, ensuring optimum quality and resulting customer satisfaction. GPF’s HDPE geomembranes exceed the Best Practice Environmental Management (BPEM) for Victoria, a key benchmark for the Australasian environmental containment industry. GPF’s HDPE geomembranes also exceed the global industry standards set by the Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI) Geomembrane related (GM) standards, GM13 (HDPE), as tested and certified by multiple international independent expert plastics and polymer laboratories including:

  • TRI Environmental, a leading independent, third party geosynthetics firm providing geosynthetics testing and research services to the international community through its offices in the United States, Australia and China; and
  • Excelplas, Australia’s leading independent plastics testing, polymer testing, geomembrane testing and rubber testing provider.
